KYES TV Reception Frequently Asked Questions.

Over the years I have received a lot of phone calls regarding KYES TV reception, and sometimes other stations, from people knowledgeable and not about electronics. I will try to address the most frequency asked questions in a way that might help.

    General Questions.

    1. Q. Usually you come in fine, but right now something is wrong?
      A. Like here and find my name on the drop down menu, Jeremy Lansman. Be sure to leave your phone number, location, and antenna type or cable company, and I will return the call, or e-mail a response. It may be a problem we know about and are working on.

    2. Q I can't get channel 5. Please help.
      A. You need to determine what you use for an antenna, or if you have cable TV. Some people don't know. In Anchorage, the cable TV electronic program guide is on channel 3, and that guide identifies the cable company. If you use cable, call the company.
    3. Q I live (???), How do I get your station?
      A. See this page which gives my advice about reception in various locations. Also, check our web page listing the location of all area TV transmitters, and our page with a large regional map.
click on snowy picture to enlarge.
    4. Q. I get channel 11 but nothing else.
      A. You live in town, probably mid town or hillside. Your antenna is not connected or is effectively non existent. Since KTVA transmits from Spenard, it has a very intense signal. KTBY is also in town, atop the Hilton, its signal is also intense, but it has a longer wavelength. The picture may be "snowy" like the image to the right. Snow is random noise. It indicates a weak signal. Interference usually has a pattern, whereas snow is random noise, or grain added to the image. Click on image to expand.
Check the co-ax leading from your TV. Is it really connected? Some callers have no antenna at all, only the co-ax. A gap, or short in the wiring can cause the effect where only channel 11 seems to come in. Be sure you have an antenna connected to the wire.

    5. Q I live on the Hillside and I don't get your station. Why can I get all stations but yours?
      A. We constructed channel 29 (move pending to 16) for you! See our general antenna advice page. If you can see Mount Susitna from your home, or near your home, you can get excellent channel 29 reception. Because channel 5 transmits from the Eagle River Hillside, and although KYES gets much better transmission that other stations in many areas due to the very high transmitter site, it cannot see parts of the Hillside. Use channel 29 instead, OK?
    6. Q. I used to get you fine, but I don't now. I get every other station, but not yours. What do I do? Here are some possibilities.
      1. click to get entire catalog page Answer #1. You may have an outdoor antenna not pointed toward our Eagle River transmitter. To the right is an example Polar Plot clipped off a Winegard Antenna catalog. very bad multipath to to misdirected antennaClick on it to see the whole PDF catalog sheet. As you can see, on this particular channel the antenna has sharp nulls slightly off the main pick up lobe. If a desired signal falls into that null it can get severely distorted. What to do? First, wee our Eagle River transmitter location map, or a regional map showing all TV station transmitter sites. A slight change might move a station into and out of a null. The image to the left was snapped off reception off my home TV antenna from nearby channel 11, a station that comes in perfectly fine, unless I turn the antenna so to put channel 11 into a null. As nulls can be frequency selective, they may only affect color, or only sound. Wind might have turned your antenna, or moved some radio wave reflecting object near by so as to modify the sensitive null effect. Try turning the antenna. Better yet, get an antenna rotator.
      2. Answer #2. Some new interference source may have started. Check our interference page.

    7. Q. I live in Anchorage, subscribe to GCI Cable, and get every station but yours.
      A. If you have a cable box, return it. If the TV is hooked directly to cable, you need to know that on cable in Anchorage only, TV channel 5 is off frequency from over the air TV. To see channel 5 your TV must have and be set to the proper Cable Mode.
    8. Q. I live in Eagle River, subscribe to GCI cable, and get every channel clearly except yours. In channel 5 I see wiggly lines.
      A. Probably this is cable leakage. The sound transmission of KYES over the air is very strong and lands inside the picture of cable TV channel 5. If GCI provided all the wiring, call them for repair. If you have provided some of the wiring, you may need to use 100% shielded wire, tighten connections, or look for other sources of leakage.
    9. Q. I want to know your frequency.
      A. Check our data page
    10. Q. Did you forget a question?
      A. Yes. Send it to me - Jeremy Lansman, via our drop down message menu..
